Arsenal (anti–)rumours.
First of all: Would everyone stop linking Stephen Appiah with a move to Arsenal. Like every other club in the Premier League Arsenal chose not to sign him at the start of the season when he was offering himself to every club who finished in the top 15 last season. He wants wages in excess of £60,000 a week and a player of his quality who has never played in the Premier League isn't going to get more than £35,000. Before Iceland collapsed, West Ham might have wasted there money on him, but the only team with any money who actually need a Defensive minded midfielder are Man City. They aren't exactly short of cash, so saving themselves a transfer fee isn't exactly a priority. If they can't get anyone else, then it just might happen.
Arsene has been predictably cryptic on who he might actually sign, but it seems pretty clear that Arteta is out of the question as Wenger has ruled him out and David Moyes would resign before he let his best player leave. Rooney was inevitable but Arteta's happy being the best player in a top 6 team. Wenger's been a bit more cagey about Arshavin, suggesting that he thinks he could do a deal with Zenit – there's no way he'll spend more than £15mil, but more likely would be £12mil and a £55,000–60,000 a week contract (£30,000 a week less than he is earning now).
People linking him with all the talented teenagers in Europe should remember he already has plenty of those in the squad already. A look at his tactics against Plymouth would suggest he's considering playing Nasri in the centre to play the Hleb role (except Nasri is actually capable of scoring goals) and introduce Vela on the left. This suggests he's preparing for at least a few games without any new attacking players in the squad. It should also be remembered that his first choice Midfield is Fabregas in the middle with Nasri and Walcott on the wings. Any new player would have to be rotated with these three players (unless they can play in a deep position) if and when they are all fit at the same time. This would at least allow Fabregas to be rested more often next season.
Those fans hoping for a world class defensive midfielder shouldn't hold their breath as there just aren't that many around. Unless we can finally convince Inler to quit Udinese we probably won't see a new defensive player until the summer. Arsene has pretty much said as much already. Besides, Denilson has quietly being playing very well, even if he isn't the best tackler in the world.

Pompey Transfer Rumours
Gary O'Neil is set to hand in a transfer request to push through a move back to Fratton Park. It's believed he is unsettled and would like a move back to the south coast.
Does anyone remember a Premier League club being linked with Joey Barton in the summer? That was Portsmouth, despite Peter Storrie rejecting the claims. Barton is believed to be a shock replacement for the departed Diarra.
Defoe is likely to return to Spurs provided he's not priced out of the move. He hasn't made it a secret he wants to reunite with Redknapp and play under him again.
Players also interesting Tony Adams are Scott Brown (I know alot of you think this is a lie but its true, it was in the Portsmouth News and on Sky Sports), Orlando Engelaar, Royston Drenthe (worked under Adams at Feyenoord as is believed to be a replacement for Traore who is likely to stay at Arsenal after the summer), Aruna Dindane, Blaise Matuidi, Fabian Delph (very unlikely now Arsenal and United interested), Didier Zokora, Luis Garcia (Boro, Spurs, and Blackburn also been offered him by Athletico Madrid, not sure how true this is!), Jimmy Bullard, Pape Diakhate, Laryea Kingston, Sidny Govou, Eduardo Gaspar, Stephen Appiah (attracting interest from Arsenal and Spurs also) and Lee Grant. Expect atleast three of these to come in. Adams is likely to do most of his business in the summer provided we stay up! One player unlikely to leave is Glen Johnson, his agent and him are looking for an apology from the paper spreading the rumours. Lauren, Richard Duffy and Herman will probably be out the door this January.
Leeds united to sign cafu on a short term deal after he spends time at Garforth Town. Also don't be suprised to see Lee Bowyer and Andy Keogh to arrive on loan for the rest of the season

Matthew upson will make a return to arsenal with some cash and nicklas Bendtner heading to upton park– bendtner will be city bound bellemy's replacement. Mark Noble or scott parker may also be going to the emirates with even more cash going to upton park. Arteta may make the move to the capital, though shaun wright philips is looking to capitalise on the turmoil at city, and is eyeing a move to arsenal for one last shot at the champoins league elano also looks set to join arsenal on loan to try and force his way into mark hughes' plans at city and feels he can do so by playing regulary at arsenal.
Alonso is still looking likely but more so at the end of the season, if rafa won't let him go until the end of th e season then mark noble will be signed (depends when liverpool get barry)

Have it on good authority that former owl and blade will be returning to wednesday most likely as part of a loan move with view to a permanent. Laws likes that he is creative and can play across midfield. Additionally former Gretna striker Nathan Taylor (17/18) is currently on trial at the club and should be very willing to listen to offers. Laws will fund this by getting rid of Gilbert.

Kolo Toure will NOT be leaving Arsenal in January because of his relationship with Arsene Wenger, who was astounded at the request.
Aston Villa are emerging as frontrunners for Jermaine Defoe, with Jon Carew seeming set for Everton.
Everton also want Kris Boyd from Rangers but David Moyes doesn't want to spend too much on him, jis original target was Vagner Love but he needed to sell Arteta to Arsenal to fund it and he didn't want to do so.
Arsenal therefore switched their attention to Michael Johnson of Man City, and Charles N'Zogbia of Newcastle.

Rattle the bars of your cages all you want, there's no chance of Rangers bringing in real quality in Jan. Finances simply aren't there this season following their exit from CL. On the other side of the city, the expected sale of McGeady will free up extra transfer funds that weren't initially budgetted. In addition Timmy won't stand for a fans favourite being sold for big money and not bringing any replacements.

Two left field one's i've heard are that talks are well, well underway to pick up big Hernan Crespo for a nominal fee, and a season long contract on big wages. Also a cheeky bid for Alvaro Recoba (plying his skills in the Greek league) for 2 Mil as a short term stopgap with Nakamura returning to Japan. .
So probably no more than 2–3 Mil spent in addition to any transfer fees for McGeady/wages free'd up with Bobo/Loovens/O'Dea moving out on loan.
As for Berra? 4 Mil down south. .not going to repeat the mistake of many Edinburgh based players and head to obscurity in the O F.

Rangers owner David Murray is in serious financial difficulty his other business interests are failing due to the decline in world metal markets ,So there will be no big buys this January,Rangers have been told they will have to look after themselves as his other companies can no longer look after themselves never mind rangers debt.

NCFC update
As more and more fans become dissilusioned with the manager it appears some of the players are also. Roeder's inept tactics have left Norwich in a tight spot. Roeder has proved once again that he is a short term solution. At WHU and NEW he did well with his inherited squad, the signings he made proved to be his downfall. It appears true again at NCFC. Ex Canary Coach Aidy Boothroyd has been lined up along with Gary McAllister or Ian Dowie. The club want someone with experience of survival battles so Dowie or Boothroyd look to be the preferred options. This decision will be made depending on the next 2 results. Watch this space.

Portsmouth Transfer rumours
Pompey looking at several players but one who looks likely to return is Gary O'Neil who we have already have had a bid turned down for. He will hand in a transfer request in the coming days.
Other players interesting us are Scott Brown, Orlando Engelaar, Blaise Matuidi, Aruna Dindane, Yohann Pele, Sidney Govou, Jimmy Bullard (who is also a target for Boro), and Royston Drenthe.
Argentinian side, Newell's Old Boys will sign Barnsley midfielder Diego Leon. They sent a scout to the West Ham vs Barnsley FA Cup third round tie and as Diego Leon was very impressive with him also hitting the cross–bar. Ex Argentina national coach, Roberto Sensini will sign the player for £1m. The deal will happen next Tuesday as Diego Leon will travel to Argentina for a medical on Monday.
There may be one problem though. Leons' wife, a Germa n supermodel, doesn't like the idea of moving to South America so it may turn into a loan move until the summer.
At the moment, the deal is permanent and that is what all three parties have agreed on.

ARSENAL BIG SHOCK!!!!
Arsene Wenger is looking for a replacement for injured cesc fabregas, and after giving up on evertons mikel arteta, he (wenger) has made a shock £10 million offer for Manchester citys midfielder stephen ireland. Wenger says he has a mixtur of power and skill, and will possibly be given first team football regularly.
1] I can force myself to believe that Liverpool will be bought by someone bigger than DIC, and will have unlimited funds to spend (even in the current economic crisis?). But to believe that Torres, Aguero and Benzema will all end up at Liverpool knowing that 3 centre forwards can never play in the same team, is impossible because none of them would move to Liverpool's bench knowing that they are guaranteed to start at any other club in the world.
2] Chelsea don't need a striker, a fact highlighted by Scolari.
3] Chelsea will look to Russian footballer of the year, 25 year old Yuri Zhirkov as the solution to the left wing deficiency and as left back when A. Cole is injured. The transfer looks easy as Abramovich's company is one of CSKA Moscow's sponsor. This is the first priority transfer as he has not played in the champions league this season. If this goes ahead no other player comes in Jan.
4] Other players being looked at are Ignazio Abate (Milan/Torino), Andres D'Alessandro, Axel Witzel (more likely in the summer).
5] Malouda will not be sold to Juventus/ Roma in the hope that Bayern come for him in the summer and that Ribery can be included in any deal taking place.

Arsene Wenger has cleared up the Kolo Toure situation. The reason for Toure making a lack of appearances for Arsenal is not because of a bad relationship between Gallas and Toure, but because together they do not provide enough height in defence, whereas Johan Djourou who has recently been taking Toure's place in the side brings more physicality into the squad. As far as Toure's transfer application is concerned, Toure initially made a transfer request but has since withdrawn it. Toure will stay at Arsenal and will not be moving to Man City. As far as Wenger's January transfer plans are concerned, up to 3 (more likely 2) players could be signed. One would be an attacking midfieler (to replace the injured Fabregas). This would be one of Andrei Arshavin (12–20 mil) and Mikel Arteta (12 mil). Another would be the signing of a more 'holding' midfielder. This would be one of Mark Noble (8 mil), Michael Johnson (10 mil) and Yaya Toure (7 mil). The other (and least likely) would be a centre back. This would be either Philipe Mexes (8 mil) or Matthew Upson (10 mil). Expect 2 midfielders to be signed in January and the centre back to wait until summer. Man City will have to look further for a centre back now that Toure has withdrawn his transfer request. They will look to Evertons Joleon Lescott, which could well happen as he would be playing in his preferred position of centre back, in which Everton are not playing him in.
