Middlesbrough are ready to step up in their summer business with the club looking to confirm 3 signings next week, to my understanding these are Kalas, Baptiste and Downing with transfers for the clubs main striking targets hitting stumbling blocks. Kalas will join on a loan with option of a permanent deal, Boro have agreed a small fee for Bolton defense Alex Baptiste who will sign a two year contract, finally a deal worth around £6,000,000 is expected to be wrapped up for Stewart Downing, the player is expected to take a large pay cut in order to finish his career at hos hometown club.

All sounds about right, but Gazette reckons its a 3 year deal for AJ Baptiste

It a complete waste of 6 million if its true downing is 30 or 31 not worth 6 million at that age I know he's a boro lad but he's never exactly set the world on fire even in his prime

I think that 6,000,000 will be a bargain if he helps get us promoted.

Smoggy goober: Downing a waste of money??? I'd agree if we don't sign with attacking intent but downing was an instrumental figure in a good season for WHU last season how can u say he's a waste of money??? He'd be the best championship player by 5 clear miles mate! Stop being negative about Downing. I didn't think boro would be able to pull off such an outstanding signing n if they do I think he will tear up this division with his goals and eye for a pass/cross never mind his free kicks or love for his hometown club!! stop winging mate n let the good times roll c'mon boro!!!!

Be great to see Downing back and I agree he would def be one of the best players in the championship, coming back to your hometown club doesn't always work but hopefully IF he does sign let's hope it's a master stroke.
Only thing that concerns me is we not close to anything up front we need 2 strikers in that can each get 15-20 goals a season that's what cost us last year in my opinion but plenty of time yet, money is there for the right players in Gibbo and Karanka we must trust.

Exactly BoroLionHeart, look at the signings we are trying to make/have made, they can easily get us up:
Baptiste : experienced, versatile and a shrewd signing on a free transfer
Downing : Premier League standard player, can change a game, like a much better Tomlin, a great show of ambition from the club
Kalas : quality, versatile defender, knows the club, obviously wants to be here
And whoever the striker is we're after must be good and all.

I know he's good but we only got 12 million for him and that was 6 years ago not only that our league is a different kettle of fish from the premier league very physically demanding I just hope he can produce let's just hope we have some spends for a unreal striker because his crosses and free kicks are going to be no good without someone getting on the end of them

Everyone keeps going on about this class striker were meant to be going for but no ones saying any names why?

Smogfather, the simple fact is, although some people have speculated/guessed, we don't know for sure who we are targeting yet

Jimmy, smogfather.
I think it's safe to say their will be a few names that we have no clue about but the usual names will keep popping up eg Murphy, Jerome, Hooper and even Mccormacks name is still mentioned.
I didn't see the Baptiste signing coming either but i'm delighted by it, a great squad player with a goal in him too if needed, we normally only have Ayala as a threat so Baptiste will be a cracking addition to the squad. I still have a feeling we'll pull a rabbit out of the hat, Karanka is very shrewd and very rarely flaps (barring Fulham away and sending Dimi up for the corner).

I seen a post on Twitter of two different people saying the reason downing wants to come back is this striker

One striker is coming from the premier league. The other is coming from abroad. Fans will be over the moon if both put pen to paper, stumbling block again is the finance package.

Had a funny conversation yesterday with higgy. He reckons that middlesbrough were paying nearly 80k p/w just for the loan players we took all season! I know we will get loans in again, but that's a massive amount of money in terms of wages for players. He reckons that 2/3 from the under 21s will be drafted in to boost numbers meaning less loans. Is this where downings and others wages will come from???? The players released must also have been on combined 30k.

Yeah but last season we had about 15 loan players throughout season that's not a nailed on number but a rough estimate

I do agree if we do sign downing its is a great statement but we can't go getting ahead of ourselves a lot of quality premier league players come down to championship and can't hack I hope he's an exception I will feel a lot happier when all our targets are identified or a proven finisher os brought in also let's not forget we have muzzy because he will be like a new signing next season if we keep him and by the way we already have the best player in the league mr Ben gibson

Andy Carroll?

Not strictly a transfer rumour but can anyone tell me the latest on Rhys Williams? Would be at least as good as a new signing if we can get him back fit and playing well.

Downing would be a brilliant signing for us but we never got promoted last season because we simply didn't score enough goals so we need to buy two reliable strikers and not waste it all on one good midfielder who will get lots of assists providing somebody can convert the chances. Vossen & Kike will not get 20 goals between them, we need to move on. The defence is proven to be the best in the division, let's hope we can afford Downing & two goal scorers and then we have a great chance of getting automatic promotion. Keep the faith, UTB!

Rhys Williams won't be back until 2016. Even then I think he will struggle to get back into the team. plus I don't think the club will be renewing his contract next year.

His contract renewal will depend on quite a few factors. His wages will certainly be reduced as he hasn't played in 2 years. He is really highly regarded within the club. If boro go up this year, he will be offered an extra year. If not then we will wait and see
