...Southampton are a big team, weve had some proper legends play for us and were been around longer than most the clubs in any division........,.,,.

..................................
Southampton founded in 1885
Wolves founded in 1877

Wolves were also one of the 12 founding teams of the football league. So your point about you being around longer than most clubs in any division is invalid to the discussion of which is the bigger club.

Southampton - Massive club (1 FA Cup win)
Leicester - Massive club (3 League cup wins)
QPR - Massive Club (1 League Cup win)

West Brom - small club (5 FA Cup wins, 1 League cup)
Wolves - small club (4 FA Cup wins, 2 League Cups)

Lets just stop all the crap being spouted & get on with supporting whichever club we profess to be supporters of

Believable1 Unbelievable0

But you forgot to say Southampton were the last of these clubs to win silverware - the Johnstone Paints Trophy only last year,

Agree0 Disagree0

The paint pot isn't considered silverware, it's gloss, nothing more.

Wrong. Saints won the Johnstone Paints Trophy only last year 2010.

why do leed and southhampton think that there a massive club just beacuse there have a big stadium so they get more fans in

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Leeds is a big club, not because size of stadia.there big because the city is one of the biggest in the country with a massive population.southampton on the other hand, is a small club with a loyal fan base, they could never be as big as leeds due to a lack of population, its that simple

Agree0 Disagree0

Southampton is one of the biggest citys in England..

Wolverhampton is a mere suburb in Birmingham

Look, both Saints and Wolves are big clubs with strong traditions....both clubs have had great players in the past and both can be giants in the future with the right leadership. I can't comment on the Wolves boardroom setup, but Saints have very able leaders off the pitch at the moment with lofty ambitions to fulfill the club's potential.

Save your spleen for Franchise FC and the Wigans of the world, both of whom would struggle to fill their stadiums if they were playing Barcelona.

can anyone tell me of a football team (outside of prem) with a bigger catchment area than bristol

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Good question mate as i can remember john hall wanting to buy city before he bought newcastle stating that they had a massive potential to go along with big catchment area only problem was he also wanted rovers as well and make one team

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah, leeds has a bigger catchment area than bristol. garyd MOT

Agree0 Disagree0

You complete fool, leeds catchment is tiny compared to bristol.how many teams are near leeds, sheffield wed, sheff utd, bradford,Scunthorpe, york, burnley, huddersfield, doncaster, barnsley, roterham, manchester utd, manchester city, the list goes on,in fact i would say your catchment is your city 440,000.now to bristol, how many teams in 50 mile radious answer 2 swindon town, cardiff city.so im guessing population of whole of somerset, gloucester part of wiltshire and population of bristol whitch alone is 430,000,is just a bit biggeryour talking MILLIONS

Agree0 Disagree0

Nottingham is the biggest in the country

Agree0 Disagree0

How many clubs within 50 miles nottingham, lets see;mansfield, coventry, derby, stoke, port vale, macclesfield, chesterfield, leicester, sheffield, birmingham, villa, wba, and on and on.your catchment is smaller than leeds plus your city is not as big as leeds.

Agree0 Disagree0

You'd think Bristol City would be better with such a wonderful catchment area wouldn't you? Sell a great product (a winning team) build a huge stadium, fill that stadium, buy new players, get better - it's easy innit...

Bristol City currently sell a rubbish product, can't fill their existing stadium (god knows why they're building a new one) and, as a result, have to sell their best players - therefore they get worse.

1) southampton filled st marys last season in the fa cup and in in div 1 thats why the chairmans wants to double the capacity to 65k ready for the prem

2) how many fans will wolves get if there in the champ next season 20k? how long have they been in the prem 1 or 2 years?

3) we took 4 to 5k away support last year to some games again in div 1 more than most prem teams can manage

4) now ur starting to worry me pompey have no training ground or academy a shack for a stadium and bring in about 14k home support,

5) saints were 25th best supported team in england last year again playing in div 1, we tried to take 65k to wembley in 2010 and that was for a johnston trophy final , look wolves were a big club but that was in 1950 anyone remember that?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Success brings the fans which ever league ye in if ye lucky enough to get in premiership ye fans will drop away if ye lucky to stop up as they wont like to go and watch ye struggle as for going away with big followings after a year and again if ye survive you will be lucky to take the same as what fulham and wigan take mate

Agree0 Disagree0

Southampton in a 65000 stadia is quite simply ludicrous.i have a question to the loud mouth saints fan, what was the average attendance the year you got relegated, answer 17800.the same year norwich got relegated with an average 25,000.wake up to reality your not a big club, you never have been, and you never will be.the one thing you have got is a great family feel on matchday with no hostility towards away support, every time ive been there your supporters have made me feel welcome.

Seriously guys, I am a devout Saints fan and have been since I was paying £2 to be a junior Saint standing behind the goal at the Milton end, probably 20 years ago. At this moment, we are not a bigger team than Wolves, but we do have so much more going for us in the mid-term. Its stupid saying we're bigger than them based on history.

Anyway, I hope all the rumours about Jay-Rod are true, but I doubt it. We'll finish 6th, lose. In the playoffs but then win the division next year and replace Wolves in the Prem

Believable0 Unbelievable1

26 Aug 2011 18:25:06
All you idiots that beleive banter put on here from rival fans are just as big idiots as they are. Most saints fans no we are not a bigger club then Wolves, infact we are not as big as any prem club. The prem is far bigger the the championship in terms of wealth. However, When Saints do get to the premiereship they have the potential to be bigger then Wolves, we are now a debt free club we own our stadium outright with no debt, we own our training facilities which we are currently expanding outright no debt. So the point i am making, with the money offered to premiereship clubs these day from tv revenue, with no massive expenditures Saints have a good chance to establish themselfs when they get there, also Saints stadium has the option to increase te capacity.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

St. Mary's was built for expansion that's what the big poles round the edge are, the problem is that before we can expand we have to improve the roads around the area otherwise there will be too much traffic etc

Average attendance 2010 - 2011
Wolves: 27696
Southampton: 22160
Utilising the reasonable assumption that turnover is a function of fan base (and for the sake of clarity excluding TV revenue):

Wolves turnover: £25Million (£61M including TV revenue)
Southampton Turnover: £14.281 Million (£14.821M including TV revenue)
Wolves are a bigger club

What absurd logic. Southampton played that season in L1 where away attendances are often less than a few hundred. Wolves played in the Premiership and attendances have to be swelled by full houses when the bigger massively supported clubs come to visit.
Not a level playing field.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

26 Aug 2011 16:56:30
Some comments on here about Wolves are unreal We could outpay plebty of clubs easily but choose not to as we dont get ripped off, we are one of the best run clubs in the country and amongst the top 3 best run, and we have a total debt of: £0. All of a sudden other smaller clubs get hold of a bit of money and put themselves in a higher bracket than wolves, wba, stoke, wigan the jump from league1 - championship is decent but to then go up again and stay there is massive we have achieved it so until you do and overtake us in every aspect keep our clubs names out of your posts

Im a Leicester fan, so a complete neutral on the Wolves/Southampton Issue.
Firstly, how can people say Soughampton are a bigger club than Wolves? Wolves are playing football in the PREMIER DEVISION not the Championship
Wolves are currently ranked 17 places higher in england (going by the current league table) than Southampton.
And if I remember rightly wern't Southampton nearly out of business a few years ago? Im pretty sure that Wolves are secure as most top flight clubs. I understand you want to hype on about your club (afetr all, as I said Im a Leicester fan) but Wake up. Southampton have got off to a great start, but its a long season ahead and Im sorry the stats dont lie.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Agree0 Disagree0

Scots never bragged about how good our game was in 2008.The last time we made a major European final. The English are the ones who go on about how great they are.Even fans who support awful championship sides.OK it was a black night for the Scottish game. But we will be back again fighting. This is what we do.And maybe the powers at be,will wake up now at the SFA.And play summer football here.Or try and model our self on the systems of Denmark or Norway. They have the in door facilities we lack here.Old style street football is gone now.We need more places for our kids to play safely. And we need to keep our pitches, that we still have. And not have houses built on them.Like happens here far to often. We will forget this if Scotland, get the 9 points we need.To get to the play off.Its all in our hands now.Come on the SCOTLAND,we are not beaten.Who cares what the English say about us.Or anybody else for that matter.Lets prove them all wrong. And make these finals, for yourself and your family and friends.Keep fighting and never give up.

Will, 'size of club' is not measured by league position you tool. Wolves are a better team than us - that is all that shows. 'Size of club' is to do with fan base. And our fan base is significantly bigger than Wolves. If you want to talk about facts then look at the average attendance figures when we were in the premiership and compare them to wolves. They are significantly higher. Add to this how long we spent in the premiership - we were not just a yoyo club like wolves. And the ambitions of our current board and the finances now behind our club making us the club with the 4th highest financial backing in the UK. And our youth system which is second to none, and our facilities. We make wolves look like a shed, in a slum, with less support than us. Granted they currently have a better first team but that is not a measure of size.
--------------------------------------

To this idiot... Russia have a massive fan base, doesnt mean there any good. Lets face it if you live on the south coast its portsmouth or southampton, the midlands have loads of teams. Wolves are the 11th most successful club in England, Southampton are 41st, Level with Oxford University LOL. Wolves have a 98% average attendence. Seriously Southampton fans be quiet, this is getting embarrassing for you

2) Wolves are soon to be having a 54,000 seater stadium as every game sells out with 50,000 applicants
3) you were one of 5 teams last time we played you who didnt fill your away allocated seats.
4) Portsmouth are bigger than Southampton and far more passionate supporters
5) Look at best supported clubs in England you will find Wolves 14/15 in England, where are Southampton?? not even in top 25 behind Derby, Forest, Ipswitch, Leicester, Leeds, Birmingham, Sheff Wed, Sheff Utd and they arnt even in Prem

Nick Maynard will be a Leicester City player by the end of the month, the club have big ambitions unlike Bristol City who will do well to stay in the division. Say all you like about how Bristol beat Leicester 1-2, but at the end of the day, it's a teams whereabouts in the league come may is what matters, for example, we thrashed Leicester 6-1 and beat them 1-0 away, this doesn't mean we are a better side, just better on the day. However IF maynard for some unlikely reason doesn't move to leicester and remains a Bristol city play, then my apologies. (Pompey fan view)

*Complete morans. Most of the rumours on here are not made by Saints fans. Here are some reason why we are a big club:
1. best youth academy of the past five years - Theo, Bale, AOC, Lallana, Mathew Mills, Nathan Dyer
2. NO debt
3. 32,000 seater - UEFA 4 star Stadia
4. Fan base - exceeds 50,000 and counting
-------------------------------------

Wolves also have not a penny of debt. Currently redeveloping the stadium up to 50,000 seater also £50m being spent on training facilities Wolves are a team going places not treading water in the championship. Lallana isn't as good as O'Hara that is the position he will likely play so he would be a complete waste of money.

Gentlemen, gentlemen, gentlemen, we seem to be getting a bit fiery out there.
As i've said on previous occassions.
Southampton are not buying everyone.
Our management had a shopping list of 5 players, 3 we have and they are still seeking the other 2.
We also know the two they are seeking is - one a leftsided centreback and the other a young fast forward.
Added to that there might be a few loan signings.
We also know the management is building a team for this season and the next - so the players coming in have to do a job for this division and the next should we get promoted.
Should we get promoted the management would most likely buy a few extra star players next season.
This would mean we would have a very strong squad which you require in the top division.
So the management are doing it the right way.

Following a bust-up over first team opportunities, Alex Bruce has been told by Simon Grayson that he has no future at Elland Road and will not be training with the first team.

Bruce has fallen out of favour at Elland Road, and it was also revealed that he refused to watch his team mates when not selected for the squad on a match day.

This is only the next player in a number that Grayson has fallen out irreparably with, including Alan Sheehan, Mike Grella, Federico Bessone and Paul Dickov.

When will Bristol City fans understand that they are a small time club who are heading back to league one - where they should be. Nicky Maynard is in the process of completing a deal with Leicester City but it is unlikely to be complete by Saturday. Martyn Waghorn will not be involved in the deal. Before everyone starts saying it is a leicester fan making up rubbish, I am a Southampton fan, so Bristol fans need to get real, a move for Maynard to Leicester is only an upwards move for him Southampton will sign two more players by the end of the window on another note.

***********************

1) Lallana IS worth 21 million to us, that is our valuation of him and we are entitled to it.

2) Arsenal are not a 'big club' in the sense they have lost all their players and are unsettled and under troubled times - why would he want to move into all that rather than be the best player at a decent sized team which he supports and with the prospect of promotion?

3) Southampton are a bigger club than Wolves, when we were in the premiership we were averaging higher attendances than them significantly, granted we are currently in the championship so the modern current perspective is that we are 'smaller' but if you look at the big picture we are a bigger city, bigger fan base and a richer club.

4) If you are going to spout rubbish about people being 'morons' learn to spell and use grammar and come up with well thought out, literate, un-biased posts.

when will people f****n understand that maynard is not going to leister or southampton or any other championship team He does not want to move from bristol city unless its to a premiership for 2 blo**y reasons. HE THINKS that bristol city has just as good chance of getting promoted to the premiership than any other championship team. Secondly his girlfrends pregnant due date couple of weeks and he does not want to change hospitals.

Hopefully this shut all the leister / southampton fans up because hes not moving to another championship team.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

I don't think it'll shut anyone up because, as per usual, you're talking rubbish.

Maynard's girlfriend is pregnant... correct me if i'm wrong here but she's not the one being sold, is she? If she's so close to her due date then surely she'd stay put until the baby is born? We all know that Maynard would get dispensation to be with her at the birth and, trust me on this, labour doesn't happen in 15 minutes flat. It's a 3hr drive to Brizzle from Leicester so i imagine Maynard would be at home as often as he's in Leicester initially.

As for Bristol having as good a chance of promotion - don't talk wet It's too early in the season to predict anything (listen up Southampton fans) but if you seriously think Bristol City have a shot at promotion, given the other clubs, not just Leicester, in the league this season, you're dreaming. West Ham, Leicester, Leeds, Forest & Ipswich are massive by comparison, whilst the likes of Southampton and Brighton will give everyone a run for their money, Bristol City are not even a blip on the promotion radar.

Southampton have got off to a great start, but its a long season ahead and Im sorry the stats dont lie.

norwich are the laughing stock of the prem will be lucky to win 5 games as we stuffed them 4 0

Lol an MK Dons fan taking the piss out of us because you beat our reserves in a cup we didnt want to be in? Now thats nice for you. We will stick to playing the big boys while you spend your Saturdays visiting Carlisle, Yeovil and Brentford.

If we were to get relegated our very worst position next season (the Championship) which we will be dissapointed to be in, will be what you are striving to achieve for the first time in your pathetic joke of a clubs 'history', and i use the word history in the loosest sense.

You better be looking over your shoulder, AFC Wimbledon are coming for you and when they go past you in the football ladder THE WHOLE country will be happy that Wimbledon are back.

So take your shallow victory, go back to your empty, lifeless generic bowl stadium and pipe down until you have done something of note.

Anyone got anything more to add?

'Adam Lallana to Wolves is unlikely for a number of reasons.

Firstly I seriously doubt Saints would sell him as he central to the way Saints are playing and their current unbeaten form on the pitch.

Secondly I doubt Wolves could afford him to be honest. Most Saints fans would value him above Oxlade-Chamberlain. It would take a bid of £8-10 million to even get a response from SFC.

Thirdly he's good friends with Andrew Surman so I doubt Wolves managed by Mick McCarthy would be on his list of clubs to go to. Drew hardly had the best of times at Molineux.

Fourthly he a born and bred Saints fan so its going to take something special to make him leave St Marys.

Fifth - Wolves are not a bigger club than Saints - and probably can't afford to pay him that much more than Saints can at the moment anyway. Plus Saints have as much chance of being in the Premiership in 2 or 3 years times as Wolves.'

This guy needs to stop browsing the internet whilst taking his medication

Wolves are Premier League
Are far bigger than Southampton
Wolves are the best run club in Britain, but yet we cant afford your 'loyal' unproven player that wouldnt even get in our team? Ive heard it all now

Every Lallana rumour is a wind up, most probably by Portsmouth fans, nevertheless, Saints fans have done a brilliant job of becoming the most likeable and modest fans around.
Baldock won't happen as its too late in the transfer window, MK are playing well and he has come through their youth
As a saints fan I expect us to try to sign a cb before the window shuts, ive heard audacious cuellar rumours - we can all dream

Adebayor the money chasing mercenary has joined spurs,he didn't look happy while sitting in the stands tonight, this is a guy who thinks he is good enough to play with the best ,he will spend most of the season trying to get a move to Madrid or Milan, the ego has landed at white hart lane.
